What's Happening?
The Winnebago Area Literacy Council in Oshkosh is set to host an event titled 'The Asian-Latino Borderlands' on April 22. This program aims to shed light on the often-overlooked histories of Asian migrants
and Asian-Latino communities at the U.S.-Mexico border. Dr. Lucero Estrella will lead the discussion, focusing on efforts to preserve these histories through collaborations with communities in northern Mexico and Texas. The event seeks to address why these stories are rarely heard and who is responsible for telling them. It will take place at the WALC Learning Center in Oshkosh, providing a platform for community engagement and historical exploration.
Why It's Important?
This event highlights the importance of recognizing and preserving diverse cultural histories that contribute to the broader narrative of immigration and border dynamics in the United States. By focusing on Asian-Latino histories, the program aims to enrich public understanding of the complex interactions and contributions of these communities. Such initiatives can foster greater cultural awareness and appreciation, potentially influencing public policy and community relations. The event also underscores the role of local organizations in promoting historical education and cultural dialogue, which can lead to more inclusive narratives in national discussions about immigration and border issues.
