What's Happening?
Cobre, an Australian mining company, is moving forward with pilot-scale testing for its Ngami In-Situ Copper Recovery Project in Botswana. The company has successfully produced copper cathode through bench-scale testwork and plans to assess the solvent extraction-electrowinning process at a larger scale. Cobre is also updating economic assessments and conducting additional testwork to evaluate the viability of full-scale in-situ copper recovery. The project aims to leverage naturally developed fractures to focus the solution into the orebody, allowing for efficient copper extraction.
Why It's Important?
The advancement of Cobre's copper recovery project is significant for the mining industry, particularly in the context of increasing global demand for copper. In-situ recovery offers a more environmentally friendly and cost-effective method of extraction compared to traditional mining techniques. Successful implementation of this project could set a precedent for similar initiatives, potentially leading to more sustainable mining practices worldwide.
