A recent meta-analysis involving over 4.2 million individuals has revealed a significant distinction in how different types of physical activity affect dementia risk. The study, published in The Lancet Public Health, found that leisure-time physical activity,
such as walking, cycling, running, swimming, and sports, is associated with a significantly lower risk of dementia. Conversely, physical activity performed as part of one's job was linked to a higher risk of developing the condition. Natan Feter, the study's first author, explained that occupational physical activity often involves repetitive, low-complexity tasks that may limit cognitive reserve and can occur in environments with hazardous exposures like air and noise pollution. This contrasts with leisure-time activities, which are typically self-selected, varied, and socially engaging. The findings challenge the long-held assumption that 'every move counts' for brain health, suggesting that the context of physical activity is crucial.
