What's Happening?
A great horned owl was rescued in southwestern Utah after being found partially encased in concrete inside a cement mixer. The owl was taken to the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah, where workers
carefully removed the concrete using forceps and cleaned its feathers with toothbrushes and dish soap. The owl, described as a 'fighter,' is recovering in an aviary and is expected to fly again once its feathers regenerate. The sanctuary plans to release the owl back into its natural habitat once it can fly silently, which is anticipated to occur next spring or summer.
Why It's Important?
The rescue and recovery of the owl highlight the importance of wildlife conservation efforts and the role of animal sanctuaries in rehabilitating injured animals. The incident underscores the potential hazards that construction sites pose to wildlife and the need for increased awareness and preventive measures. The sanctuary's work not only aids in the owl's recovery but also raises public awareness about the challenges faced by wildlife in urban and industrial areas. Successful rehabilitation and release of the owl can serve as a model for similar conservation efforts.
