What's Happening?
Kyivstar, a subsidiary of VEON, has successfully launched its direct-to-device Starlink satellite connectivity service in Ukraine, significantly enhancing communication capabilities in the war-torn country. Since its introduction in November, the service has attracted
over 3 million subscribers and facilitated more than 1.2 million SMS messages. The technology has been particularly vital in Ukraine's southern and eastern regions, which have been heavily impacted by ongoing conflict. The service is now available in major cities including Kyiv, Lviv, Vinnytsia, Khmelnytskyi, and Dnipro, and has recently been expanded to support iPhone users with iOS 26.2 or later. Kyivstar customers can access the satellite connectivity through their existing SIM cards at no additional cost.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of Starlink's satellite service in Ukraine is crucial for maintaining communication in areas affected by conflict, where traditional infrastructure may be compromised. This development underscores the importance of satellite technology in providing reliable connectivity in crisis situations. For Kyivstar, the service not only enhances its market presence but also demonstrates its commitment to supporting Ukraine's connectivity needs during challenging times. The initiative also highlights the growing role of satellite technology in bridging digital divides and ensuring access to communication in remote or underserved regions.
