What's Happening?
Rhayader has been chosen as one of five community energy initiatives in Powys, Wales, to receive feasibility studies for renewable energy projects. These studies are part of the Powys Energy for All project,
run by the sustainability charity Severn Wye. The selected projects aim to generate renewable energy locally, ensuring that decision-making and benefits remain within the community. The feasibility studies will be conducted by Powys-based consultancy Dulas Ltd and will assess technical considerations, generation potential, costs, and governance options. The initiative is supported by the Energy Redress Just Transition Fund and Powys County Council.
Why It's Important?
The selection of Rhayader and other communities for these energy initiatives is significant as it promotes local ownership and control over renewable energy resources. This approach can lead to increased community engagement, economic benefits, and energy independence. By focusing on community-owned solar generation projects, the initiative supports the transition to sustainable energy sources and contributes to reducing carbon emissions. Additionally, the project aims to build skills and confidence within the community, enabling them to manage projects and collaborate with local authorities and funding partners effectively.
What's Next?
The feasibility studies will provide the selected communities with the necessary information to advance their renewable energy projects. As these projects develop, they will create opportunities for shared learning and collaboration, potentially serving as models for other communities interested in pursuing similar initiatives. The Powys Energy for All project will continue to support these groups as they explore options for community-owned solar generation, helping them build strong relationships with stakeholders and secure funding for their projects.
