What's Happening?
HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has issued a warning about a surge in Self Assessment scams as the January 31, 2026, deadline for tax returns approaches. Since February 2025, over 4,800 scams have been reported, with scammers using tactics such as fake
tax demands to extract personal and financial information from individuals. HMRC has received more than 135,500 reports of suspected scams in the past 10 months, including 29,000 related to fake tax refund claims. The department advises individuals to verify the authenticity of communications claiming to be from HMRC and to report suspicious messages.
Why It's Important?
The increase in scams poses a significant threat to individuals who may be vulnerable to fraudulent schemes, particularly during tax season. These scams can lead to financial loss and identity theft, highlighting the need for heightened vigilance and public awareness. HMRC's proactive measures, including shutting down fake websites and phone numbers, aim to protect taxpayers. However, individuals must remain cautious and informed to avoid falling victim to these scams. The situation underscores the broader issue of cybercrime and the importance of robust security practices to protect personal information.
