What's Happening?
Blake's Lotaburger, an iconic New Mexican fast-food chain, and the Rule family, its owners, are celebrating a decade of continuous support for The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center (UNM CCC) Lobo Cancer Challenge. The family's involvement
began even before the inaugural event ten years ago, stemming from a personal connection and a desire to honor their lost matriarch. Ron Rule, CEO of Blake's Lotaburger, co-founded the event with former UNM CCC Director and CEO Cheryl Willman after his wife's passing from metastatic lung cancer. What started as a cycling event has evolved into a community-wide celebration, now including a 5K Run/Walk, a stair challenge, and a Fun Run for children. Thanks to Blake's and other corporate sponsors, 100% of the funds raised by participants, known as Challengers, directly benefit the cancer center.
Why It's Important?
The enduring commitment of Blake's Lotaburger and the Rule family to the Lobo Cancer Challenge is profoundly important for cancer research and patient care in New Mexico. Their consistent sponsorship ensures that all funds raised by Challengers directly support the UNM CCC, a critical resource for the state. This long-term partnership highlights the significant impact that local businesses and philanthropic families can have on public health initiatives. The event's growth from 168 participants to 1,940 in 2025 demonstrates its increasing community engagement and success in raising awareness and funds for cancer. For the UNM CCC, this support is vital for advancing research, providing top-notch treatment, and offering hope to countless individuals and families affected by cancer in New Mexico. It also fosters a strong sense of community and collective action against a pervasive disease.
What's Next?
The Lobo Cancer Challenge is expected to continue its annual tradition, with Blake's Lotaburger and the Rule family maintaining their role as key sponsors. The event's expansion to include various activities like a 5K, stair challenge, and kids' fun run suggests a continued effort to make it accessible and engaging for a broader demographic. The UNM CCC will likely continue to benefit from the funds raised, which are crucial for its ongoing research and patient support programs. The personal stories and community spirit generated by the event will continue to inspire participation and donations. The long-term success of the Lobo Cancer Challenge will depend on sustained corporate and community support, ensuring that the UNM CCC can continue its vital work in combating cancer in New Mexico.
Beyond the Headlines
The story of Blake's Lotaburger's involvement with the Lobo Cancer Challenge goes beyond corporate sponsorship; it's a testament to the power of personal tragedy transforming into community action and enduring philanthropy. This partnership exemplifies how local businesses, deeply rooted in their communities, can become pillars of support for critical social causes.
