What's Happening?
NASA is developing a new solar sail technology designed to achieve very high characteristic acceleration and support ultra-high delta-V missions. The project, led by the University of California, Los Angeles, aims to create solar sails with large effective
areas, potentially transforming space exploration by enabling missions currently beyond the capabilities of conventional propulsion. The proposed architecture eliminates the need for membrane unfolding, simplifying deployment and integrating a lightweight, coilable truss structure. This innovation could support missions such as Earth and Venus pole-sitter spacecraft and fast-transit probes to the outer planets.
