What's Happening?
A three-day international conference titled 'Sustainable Innovations in Agriculture, Veterinary and Agro-related Matters' commenced at the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS) in Raichur. The event is coordinated by the National Agricultural Development
Cooperative Limited (NADCL) from Baramulla, Jammu and Kashmir. The conference was inaugurated by Srinivasa Rao, Director of the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi. Rao emphasized the importance of agricultural universities and scientists collaborating to address challenges faced by farmers, particularly those arising from natural disasters and market dynamics. He highlighted the significant issue of food wastage, valued at ₹1.3 lakh crore annually, urging universities to develop solutions. UAS Raichur's Vice-Chancellor, M. Hanumanthappa, discussed the university's contributions, including its biological production unit's role in managing black thrips in chillis and the seed production unit's distribution of 22,000 quintals of seeds to farmers. The university plans to establish a value-added park for cereals to benefit small and micro-grain growers. The conference also featured discussions from various agricultural and veterinary experts.
Why It's Important?
The conference underscores the critical role of academic and research institutions in advancing agricultural practices and supporting farmers. By fostering collaboration between universities and scientists, the event aims to address pressing issues such as food wastage and crop management, which have significant economic implications. The focus on sustainable innovations is crucial for enhancing agricultural productivity and resilience, particularly in the face of climate change and market volatility. The establishment of a value-added park for cereals at UAS Raichur represents a strategic move to support small-scale farmers, potentially boosting local economies and food security. The conference also highlights the importance of interdisciplinary approaches in tackling agricultural challenges, which could lead to more effective and sustainable solutions.
What's Next?
The outcomes of the conference are expected to influence future research and development initiatives in agriculture. The discussions and collaborations initiated at the event may lead to new projects and partnerships aimed at improving agricultural practices and farmer livelihoods. The establishment of the value-added park for cereals at UAS Raichur is a significant step forward, and its development will be closely watched by stakeholders in the agricultural sector. Additionally, the focus on reducing food wastage could lead to policy recommendations and innovations that address this critical issue. The conference may also inspire similar events and collaborations in other regions, further promoting sustainable agricultural practices.
