What's Happening?
The Netherlands is set to expand its fleet of CV90 infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) as part of a collaborative procurement initiative led by Sweden. Dutch State Secretary for Defence, Gijs Tuinman, announced
the procurement to parliament on December 19. This initiative, known as the CV90 MkIV Nordic project, includes participation from Estonia, Finland, Lithuania, the Netherlands, and Norway. A technical agreement was signed in November, outlining the principles of cooperation, technical requirements, and an action plan leading up to the main contract signing, expected in early 2026. The Dutch Ministry of Defence highlighted the benefits of joint procurement, such as cost savings and improved interoperability. The Royal Netherlands Army's existing CV90s are undergoing a mid-life upgrade, which includes the installation of the Iron Fist-Light Decoupled active protection system. This upgrade involves over 20 local companies and is part of a USD500 million contract awarded to BAE Systems Hägglunds in January 2021. The upgraded vehicles are scheduled for delivery by the end of 2026 and will equip an additional armoured infantry battalion.
