U.S. Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine from Virginia, along with Senators Jim Justice and Shelley Moore Capito from West Virginia, have introduced the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields National Historic District Boundary Expansion and Partnership Act of
2026. This bipartisan legislation aims to expand the historic district to include Rockbridge County in Virginia and three counties in West Virginia. The Shenandoah Valley Battlefields National Historic District, established by Congress in 1996, is recognized for its significant Civil War battlefields and historic sites. The expansion is intended to preserve additional historical landscapes and boost local tourism. Over the past 30 years, the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation has preserved over 8,000 acres of land, supporting the development of visitor centers and educational programs.
