Tyler Schroeder, a housing advocate with Lakes and Prairies Community Action Partnership (CAPLP) in Moorhead, is actively working to empower homeless youth aged 18 to 24. Beyond assisting them with housing, community resources, and self-sufficiency skills,
Schroeder is dedicated to helping these young individuals register to vote. He believes that enabling them to participate in elections ensures their voices are heard and that their issues, despite experiencing poverty, are recognized as important within the community. Schroeder's efforts were recently acknowledged with a MoorHeart award from the Moorhead City Council, an honor given to individuals and organizations demonstrating exceptional community commitment. His coworker, Jessica Jungroth, nominated him, highlighting his consistent advocacy for vulnerable youth.
Why It's Important?
Schroeder's initiative is crucial for addressing the systemic disenfranchisement often faced by homeless youth. By facilitating voter registration, he helps integrate a marginalized population into the democratic process, ensuring that their unique perspectives and needs are represented. Schroeder plans to continue his work with CAPLP, assisting clients until they reach age 25. He and a coworker are also distributing voter information flyers to clients and households served by CAPLP, aiming to further increase voter participation among this demographic. The recognition from the MoorHeart award may also inspire other communities and organizations to adopt similar comprehensive approaches to supporting homeless youth, combining immediate aid with long-term empowerment strategies like civic engagement.
