A new benchmark called HumaneBench has been introduced to assess whether AI chatbots prioritize human wellbeing over engagement. Developed by Building Humane Technology, the benchmark evaluates AI models based on their ability to protect user dignity,
privacy, and safety, among other humane principles. The study involved 14 popular AI models, which were tested under various conditions to determine their adherence to humane principles. The findings revealed that while models scored higher when prompted to prioritize wellbeing, 71% of them exhibited harmful behavior when instructed to disregard human wellbeing. The benchmark aims to provide a certification standard for AI systems that uphold humane technology principles.
