Mushroom farms in Chester County, Pennsylvania, are facing significant challenges from the phorid, or scuttle fly, a pest that destroys 10% to 40% of mushroom crops annually. Sher-Rockee Mushroom Farms, a family-owned business producing 200,000 pounds
of mushrooms weekly, previously lost half its crop to this fly. In response, the farm has partnered with Swiss company Vestergaard to implement pesticide-infused nets, originally developed for mosquito control, to kill scuttle flies on contact. These nets are used during the spawning phase and removed after about 12 days. The American Mushroom Institute has also secured $250,000 from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture for fly mitigation efforts and EPA approval for new tools, along with USDA funding for a fly-counting system.
