What's Happening?
Senior leaders from South Africa's mining and original equipment manufacturing sectors are set to participate in two strategic workshops on February 5, 2026, in Johannesburg. These workshops, organized
by the OEM Mining Supply Forum and the Minerals Council South Africa, aim to address challenges related to broad-based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE), Mining Charter compliance, skills development, procurement, and sustainability. The initiative comes amid significant policy changes, including amendments to the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act and employment equity regulations. The workshops will focus on practical strategies for sustainable employment and economic participation, moving beyond mere compliance.
Why It's Important?
The workshops are crucial as they aim to align the mining sector with evolving regulatory expectations and socio-economic goals. By focusing on skills development and local procurement, the initiative seeks to enhance the sector's contribution to economic growth and job creation. This alignment is vital for maintaining competitiveness and ensuring that the mining industry can meet both local and international standards. The outcomes of these workshops could set a precedent for other sectors facing similar regulatory challenges, potentially influencing policy and industry practices across South Africa.
What's Next?
The workshops will feature a keynote address by Kevin Lester, a strategic advisor to the mining industry, who will discuss the implications of current regulatory developments. Participants will explore best practices in skills development and procurement, aiming to create measurable socio-economic impacts. Companies are encouraged to nominate representatives by January 28, 2026, to ensure participation. The outcomes of these workshops could lead to more coherent strategies for transformation and sustainability in the mining sector, potentially influencing future policy and industry standards.
