What's Happening?
The World Food Programme (WFP) Guatemala Country Office is actively implementing its Country Strategic Plan (CSP) for 2021–2026, which places a strong emphasis on building resilience, fortifying food systems, and adapting to climate change. As part of
these strategic objectives, WFP Guatemala is expanding its efforts to improve market access, foster entrepreneurship, and promote climate-smart agriculture. To support these initiatives, WFP is recruiting an international consultant specializing in resilience and food systems. This consultant will be tasked with providing technical leadership and coordination for WFP Guatemala's food systems and market access programs, with a particular focus on entrepreneurship, value chain development, and integrated resilience programming. The role also involves supporting fundraising efforts and serving as the focal point for the KOICA-funded Integrated Resilience Project.
Why It's Important?
This recruitment highlights WFP's commitment to addressing critical issues of food security and sustainable livelihoods in Guatemala. By focusing on resilience building and strengthening food systems, the WFP aims to empower smallholder farmers and vulnerable communities to withstand environmental shocks and economic challenges. Enhancing market access and promoting climate-smart agriculture can lead to increased income generation, improved food availability, and greater economic stability for these populations. The consultant's role in leading these initiatives and coordinating with partners like KOICA is crucial for the effective implementation of programs that can have a tangible, positive impact on the lives of many Guatemalans, contributing to long-term development and reducing reliance on emergency aid.
What's Next?
The selected Resilience Consultant will be responsible for a range of key activities over a six-month duration. These include supporting the development and implementation of resilience projects aligned with WFP's strategic plans, enhancing efforts to strengthen market access and food systems, and serving as the focal point for the KOICA Integrated Resilience Project. The consultant will also provide technical assistance for capacity strengthening programs to the Guatemalan government, develop innovative tools and partnerships, and strengthen value chains. Furthermore, the role involves preparing accurate reports, contributing to fundraising proposals, and coordinating with other WFP teams to integrate cross-cutting topics like gender and environmental assessments into resilience and food system workstreams. This comprehensive approach aims to ensure the sustainability and impact of WFP's interventions in Guatemala.
Beyond the Headlines
The WFP's focus on resilience and food systems in Guatemala extends beyond immediate humanitarian aid, aiming to foster long-term self-sufficiency and sustainable development. By investing in market access and climate-smart agriculture, the program addresses systemic vulnerabilities that contribute to food insecurity. This approach recognizes that environmental factors, such as climate change, and economic factors, such as market access, are deeply intertwined with the well-being of communities. The success of these initiatives could serve as a model for other regions facing similar challenges, demonstrating how integrated resilience programming can lead to lasting positive change. It also underscores the importance of international partnerships, like that with KOICA, in achieving comprehensive development goals.
