A historic drought in parts of the United States has led to a significant reduction in mosquito populations, particularly in western and Midwest states like Minnesota, North Dakota, and Colorado. Despite the decrease in mosquito numbers, scientists are
concerned about the spread of mosquito-borne viruses, especially West Nile virus, which has reached a 22-year high in the U.S. This year, 143 cases of West Nile virus have been reported, with five deaths in Arizona, which accounts for roughly half of the cases. The drought has concentrated mosquitoes around smaller water bodies, increasing the risk of virus transmission.
