What's Happening?
Charlie Gunsell, the head coach of Ludington High School's football team, has been named the Detroit Lions High School Football Coach of the Week for week seven of the 2025 season. Gunsell's team, the Ludington Orioles,
achieved a significant victory against Whitehall, winning 32-7 during their Homecoming game. This victory marked Gunsell's 100th career win and secured at least a share of the West Michigan Conference-Lakes Division title. Ludington is currently ranked ninth in Division 4. Gunsell, who is in his 27th season coaching at Ludington and his 22nd as head coach, has announced he will step down at the end of the season. The Detroit Lions High School Coach of the Week program recognizes coaches who demonstrate success on the field and contribute positively to their teams and communities.
Why It's Important?
The recognition of Charlie Gunsell by the Detroit Lions highlights the importance of high school sports in fostering community spirit and developing young athletes. The program not only celebrates coaching excellence but also provides financial support to high school football programs, with donations aimed at promoting player health and safety. This initiative underscores the role of sports in education and community development, offering resources that can enhance the quality of high school football in Michigan. Gunsell's recognition serves as an inspiration to other coaches and emphasizes the impact of dedicated coaching on student-athletes and their communities.
What's Next?
As Gunsell prepares to step down at the end of the season, Ludington High School will need to find a successor who can continue the legacy of success and community engagement established during his tenure. The Detroit Lions will continue their Coach of the Week program throughout the season, culminating in the selection of a Coach of the Year, who will receive additional support for their school's football program. This ongoing recognition and support from the Lions and their partners will continue to benefit high school football programs across Michigan.
