What's Happening?
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has marked significant progress in India's defense self-reliance by securing 22 Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for various systems worth approximately
Rs 1.30 lakh crore. These systems are set to be manufactured by Indian industries in 2025, as part of the 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' vision. DRDO Chairman Samir V Kamat highlighted the organization's achievements during its 68th anniversary, emphasizing the delivery and induction of several systems. Notable systems include integrated air defense weapon systems, conventional ballistic missile systems, and advanced light weight torpedoes. The DRDO has also signed 11 contracts valued at Rs 26,000 crore for acquisitions with production partners, further boosting India's defense capabilities.
Why It's Important?
The advancements by DRDO are crucial for India's strategic autonomy in defense, reducing reliance on foreign technology and imports. This move aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat', aiming to strengthen national security and foster domestic defense manufacturing. The induction of these systems not only enhances India's defense capabilities but also stimulates the growth of the defense manufacturing sector, creating opportunities for local industries. The focus on next-generation needs, including cybersecurity and artificial intelligence, positions India to address future challenges effectively.
What's Next?
DRDO plans to continue its collaboration with stakeholders in the defense ecosystem to meet India's futuristic challenges. The organization is focusing on next-generation technologies, including cyber security and artificial intelligence, to further enhance its capabilities. User evaluation trials for several systems are either completed or in the final stages, indicating a steady progression towards full operational deployment. The DRDO's efforts are expected to catalyze further development in the defense manufacturing sector, with more systems likely to be inducted in the coming years.
