A lightning strike on Monday afternoon caused a power outage affecting 633 customers of Algona Municipal Utilities (AMU) in Algona. The strike, which occurred around 3:13 PM south of Algona, brought down two wires and triggered a fault that opened a feeder
breaker at an AMU substation. AMU General Manager John Bilsten reported that crews were able to restore power to nearly half of the affected customers within 20 minutes. However, heavy rain in the area slowed further progress, with full power restoration to all remaining customers achieved around 6:10 PM. The incident also resulted in damage to several customers' modems, routers, and other service equipment, which AMU crews worked to replace overnight and into Tuesday morning.
