What's Happening?
Rosenborg Castle, a significant historical landmark in Copenhagen, Denmark, is set to undergo its most extensive renovation since its completion in 1634. The project, named 'Rigets Skatkammer' (The Kingdom's Treasury), will introduce a new underground
treasury, modern visitor facilities, and a partial restoration of its historic moat. This ambitious undertaking aims to enhance the visitor experience and allow for the display of a greater number of royal treasures, including crown jewels, regalia, and historical costumes. The total cost of the renovation is estimated at 661 million Danish kroner, with significant contributions from the A.P. Møller Foundation (450 million DKK), the Augustinus Foundation (80 million DKK), and the Danish state (131 million DKK). The project is being managed by Slots- & Naturstyrelsen (Palaces and Nature Agency) and is expected to be completed by 2032.

Upon completion, visitors entering from Øster Voldgade will encounter the restored moat, a new castle bridge, and views of Rosenborg Castle situated on its own island. They will have the option to cross the new bridge to the castle itself or descend to the underground treasury to experience the royal cultural heritage in new, state-of-the-art settings. The focus will be on preparing the new exhibition spaces and ensuring the safe transfer and display of the royal treasures.
