What's Happening?
The Strategic Management Society (SMS) has issued an open call for applications to serve on its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee. The committee is part of the SMS Board of Directors, and successful applicants will begin their terms on January
1, 2027. The DEI Committee's primary role is to enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion across all SMS activities, including publications and programs. This involves assessing participation, ensuring diverse perspectives are represented, and identifying and removing barriers that might limit opportunities for contribution. A key focus is to broaden access to the SMS and create more opportunities for scholars globally to participate, share their work, and contribute to the field of strategic management. Committee members are expected to dedicate 2-3 hours per month to committee work, attend quarterly meetings both virtually and in-person, and maintain communication via email. The initial term is one year, with the possibility of two renewals. Applicants must be current members of the Strategic Management Society and demonstrate an interest in advancing DEI initiatives.
Why It's Important?
This initiative by the Strategic Management Society underscores a growing recognition within academic and professional organizations of the critical importance of DEI. By actively seeking diverse representation on its DEI Committee, SMS aims to foster a more inclusive environment that can lead to broader intellectual contributions and a richer understanding of strategic management. The committee's work in identifying barriers and developing inclusive programming can significantly impact how research is conducted, disseminated, and received globally. For scholars from underrepresented backgrounds or regions, this could mean increased opportunities for participation and recognition, potentially diversifying the leadership and thought processes within the strategic management field. The emphasis on global participation also highlights a move towards de-centralizing academic influence, ensuring that perspectives from various international contexts are integrated into the core of strategic management discourse. This commitment can serve as a model for other professional societies looking to enhance their own DEI efforts.
What's Next?
Applications for the SMS DEI Committee positions are open until October 28, 2026. Following the application period, the DEI Committee will review all submissions, and applicants can expect to be notified of decisions by mid-December. The selected members will then begin their one-year terms on January 1, 2027. During their tenure, the committee will continue its work on encouraging broader participation, listening to member experiences to better serve scholars from diverse backgrounds, developing programs that support global scholars, and advising SMS leaders on policies that strengthen inclusion. The ongoing efforts of this committee will likely lead to new initiatives and policy recommendations aimed at making the Strategic Management Society a more equitable and inclusive organization, potentially influencing its future conferences, publications, and membership engagement strategies.
Beyond the Headlines
The Strategic Management Society's proactive approach to DEI reflects a broader societal shift towards valuing diverse perspectives and ensuring equitable access in professional and academic spheres. Beyond the immediate goal of enhancing SMS's internal diversity, this initiative contributes to a larger conversation about the role of professional organizations in promoting social equity. By focusing on 'who participates, whose perspectives are represented, and where barriers may limit opportunities,' SMS is engaging with fundamental questions of fairness and access that extend beyond its specific discipline. This commitment could inspire other academic fields to critically examine their own structures and practices, potentially leading to a more inclusive global academic landscape. The long-term implications could include a more diverse body of research, new theoretical frameworks emerging from varied cultural contexts, and a more robust and representative global academic community.
