What's Happening?
Rocket Lab plans to conduct an in-orbit demonstration of the U.S. Space Force’s Space Data Network (SDN) in 2027, utilizing one of its Photon spacecraft. This initiative is part of a broader effort by the Space Systems Command to establish common interfaces
that allow various commercial satellite systems to connect to the SpaceX-built SDN backbone. Rocket Lab's $12 million contract includes equipping a Photon spacecraft with optical communications and networking hardware to test secure optical communications interoperability between satellites and ground systems. Rocket Lab is one of five companies, alongside Amazon LEO for Government, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, and York Space Systems, each receiving $12 million for this $60 million effort to demonstrate connectivity with the SDN.
