What's Happening?
Women in Najia Village on Viwa Island, Fiji, have received a new boat to enhance their pearl farming operations. This development is part of the Pasifika WE GUARDIANS project, which is led by Alinea International in collaboration with the Soqosoqo Vaka
Marama iTaukei Ba. The initiative is funded by the Government of Canada through Global Affairs Canada and aims to support women-led businesses across Fiji, Samoa, and Tuvalu. The new boat is expected to improve safety and efficiency for the women managing pearl oyster farms, facilitating better market access and business expansion. The Ministry of Fisheries has provided technical support, including feasibility studies and training, confirming that the seawater around Viwa is ideal for pearl farming due to its stable and high salinity levels.
