Researchers at Emory University and Georgia Institute of Technology have developed an AI system, CapuchinAI, to automate cognitive studies of capuchin monkeys in the wild. This system uses facial recognition and real-time touchscreen testing to evaluate

The American Journal of Primatology published a proof-of-concept for this method, which is the first scalable way to study primate cognition in their natural environments. The system identifies individual monkeys, presents them with learning tasks on a touchscreen, and rewards them with food for correct responses. Field tests in Costa Rica showed a 97% accuracy in identifying individual capuchins, demonstrating the system's potential for scalable cognitive testing.
