Sizable Energy, a startup co-founded by Manuele Aufiero, is pioneering a novel approach to energy storage by moving traditional pumped-storage hydropower technology to the ocean. This method involves using two sealed, flexible reservoirs connected by a plastic
tube and turbines, with one reservoir floating on the surface and the other anchored on the seabed. The system operates by pumping super salty water from the bottom to the top reservoir when electricity is cheap, and releasing it back down to generate power when needed. This innovative approach aims to overcome the limitations of land-based pumped hydro, which is constrained by suitable topography. Sizable Energy recently secured $8 million in funding to advance this technology, with plans to deploy several commercial projects by 2026.
