What's Happening?
Effective October 2, the Quincy School District will begin using ParentSquare to send attendance notifications to families. This new system will replace the previous SchoolMessenger platform for communicating student absences and tardiness. ParentSquare will allow
families to receive notifications via text, email, phone call, or the ParentSquare app, depending on their preferred settings. The system will send notifications around 5 p.m. each day if a student is marked absent or tardy. Families will also have the option to submit notes explaining absences directly through the platform, attach supporting documents, and report upcoming absences in advance. The district emphasizes that submitting an absence report does not automatically excuse it, as school staff will review information according to district policies.
Why It's Important?
This transition to ParentSquare is a significant step for the Quincy School District in enhancing communication between schools and families regarding student attendance. Consistent attendance is crucial for academic success, with research indicating that chronic absenteeism can negatively impact a student's ability to read proficiently by third grade, succeed in middle school, and graduate from high school. By providing a more streamlined and accessible notification system, ParentSquare aims to help families stay connected, respond quickly to attendance issues, and support consistent school attendance. This initiative underscores the district's commitment to student well-being and academic achievement, recognizing the vital role parents play in ensuring their children's educational journey.
What's Next?
Families in the Quincy School District do not need to take any action to begin receiving attendance notifications through ParentSquare, provided their contact information in Skyward is current. The new system will automatically go into effect on October 2. The district encourages families to ensure their contact details are up-to-date to avoid missing important messages. While ParentSquare offers new functionalities for reporting absences, families still retain the option to call their school office directly to report an absence or discuss attendance concerns. The district will continue to monitor the effectiveness of the new system and provide support to families as they adapt to the change.
Beyond the Headlines
The implementation of ParentSquare by the Quincy School District reflects a broader trend in education towards leveraging technology to improve communication and parental engagement. Such platforms are becoming increasingly essential for fostering a collaborative environment between schools and homes, particularly in addressing critical issues like student attendance. Beyond mere notifications, these systems can empower parents with tools to actively participate in their children's educational journey, potentially leading to better academic outcomes and stronger school communities. The emphasis on reducing chronic absenteeism through improved communication highlights the systemic challenges schools face and the innovative solutions being adopted to ensure every student has the opportunity to succeed.
