Illumina has introduced its Constellation mapped read technology at the American Society of Human Genetics meeting. This technology aims to improve the detection of genomic regions that are challenging for short-read technologies. GeneDx, participating
in an early access program, has piloted this technology to identify difficult-to-detect variants in rare diseases. The pilot study involved 160 DNA samples from individuals with known genetic diseases, using NovaSeq X Plus systems with Constellation kits. The technology successfully identified biologically relevant variants linked to conditions such as myotonic dystrophy, spinal muscular atrophy, and chronic granulomatous disease. Constellation technology allows for mapping through difficult genomic regions while maintaining accuracy, providing long-range information from short-read technology.
