What's Happening?
Jordan's leather and garment industry is positioned as a key driver for the country's economic growth and employment goals, according to Ihab Qadri from the Jordan Chamber of Industry. The sector is part of Jordan's Economic Modernization Vision (EMV)
and is expected to create 149,000 new jobs in the coming years. The industry currently employs around 30,000 Jordanians and is particularly effective in increasing economic participation among women and youth in rural areas. The strategy involves expanding satellite production units linked to industrial hubs, which helps localize the labor force and bridge the skills gap through vocational training.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of Jordan's leather and garment sector is crucial for the country's economic stability and growth. By creating a significant number of jobs, the sector can reduce unemployment and improve living standards, particularly in rural areas where economic opportunities are limited. The focus on women's and youth employment can lead to greater economic inclusion and empowerment. Additionally, the sector's growth can enhance Jordan's export competitiveness, contributing to a more diversified and resilient economy. The success of this initiative could serve as a model for other industries and countries looking to achieve similar economic and social goals.
