What's Happening?
The PNG Women in Agriculture Development Foundation is conducting its Annual General Meeting at the National Agriculture Research Institute in Morobe Province. The meeting aims to align the organization's
goals with the National Agriculture Sector Plan, transitioning from subsistence farming to commercial agriculture. Dr. Nelson Simbiken, Director General of NARI, emphasized the strategic position of PNG Women in Agriculture to empower women from primary school to adulthood, impacting social and economic development. The Australian High Commission representative, Rubie Yamuna, encouraged partnerships and collaboration with donor agencies. The AGM includes the election of new executives and a review of the organization's constitution.
Why It's Important?
The empowerment of women in agriculture is crucial for advancing social and economic development in rural areas. By transitioning to commercial agriculture, PNG Women in Agriculture can significantly contribute to the national economy and improve the livelihoods of women farmers. The support from NARI and potential partnerships with donor agencies can provide the necessary resources and infrastructure to facilitate this transition. This initiative not only enhances gender equality but also strengthens the agricultural sector, which is vital for food security and economic growth in Papua New Guinea.
