Texas is moving forward with plans to allow the reuse of treated oilfield wastewater, known as produced water, outside of traditional disposal methods. This initiative comes as officials and industry leaders warn of a looming shortage of underground disposal space
for the nearly 1 billion gallons of wastewater generated daily in the Permian Basin. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) is developing two permitting programs: one for discharging treated wastewater into rivers, which began accepting applications in 2024 but has yet to issue permits, and another for land application for irrigation or rangeland restoration, for which a proposed rule was released earlier this year.
