What's Happening?
The Tinley Park Village Board has approved plans for a new sports dome to be constructed south of Interstate 80 and west of the Brookside Marketplace shopping center. The project, proposed by GK Development Properties LLC, will feature a 142,000-square-foot
inflatable dome and a building that could accommodate stores and restaurants. The site, previously home to a 9-hole golf course, has been vacant since 2012. The dome is expected to primarily serve as a training facility for sports like baseball and soccer, with limited space for competitive play. The facility will include two fields and parking for 370 vehicles, anticipating daily patronage of 200 to 350 people. Construction is expected to begin within the next month.
Why It's Important?
The development of the sports dome is significant for Tinley Park as it revitalizes a long-vacant property, providing a new recreational venue for the community. This project is part of a broader effort to enhance local amenities and attract more visitors to the area. The dome will offer an indoor space for sports activities, which is particularly beneficial given the region's weather conditions. Additionally, the project aligns with other local developments, such as the approved Topgolf driving range, contributing to the area's economic growth and community engagement. The sports dome is expected to boost local businesses by increasing foot traffic and providing new opportunities for retail and dining establishments.
What's Next?
Following the approval, construction of the sports dome is anticipated to commence soon, with the facility expected to open to the public later this year. The Tinley Park-Park District is also working on a separate sports dome project at the former Tinley Park Mental Health Center site, pending environmental cleanup and state approval. Community feedback will be considered in the redevelopment process. The village's fiber optic infrastructure is also being expanded, with Clear Wave Fiber conducting right-of-way work, ensuring improved internet services for residents.
