What's Happening?
A program called Perfect Pair, founded by a University of Michigan student in 2020, aims to reduce social isolation by pairing college students with older adults. This initiative was launched during the pandemic to address the increased loneliness experienced
by many older individuals due to social distancing measures. The program facilitates meaningful interactions between generations, providing companionship and support to older adults while offering students valuable life experiences and insights.
Why It's Important?
The Perfect Pair program addresses a critical social issue: loneliness among older adults, which has been exacerbated by the pandemic. By fostering intergenerational connections, the program not only improves the mental health and well-being of older adults but also enriches the lives of participating students. This initiative highlights the potential for community-based solutions to social problems and underscores the importance of social support networks. It also reflects a growing recognition of the need for innovative approaches to combat loneliness and promote mental health.
