What's Happening?
Students from Calexico High School's Law Enforcement program have completed a significant research project documenting the history of Calexico's Chiefs of Police. Under the guidance of Police Chief Armando Orozco, five seniors—Andre Cota, Andrea Felix,
Miguel Arroyo, Ingrid Haro, and Esteban Gomez—researched and created a historical timeline of the city's police leadership dating back to the early 1900s. This project involved extensive use of digital resources and library archives, culminating in a timeline that will be displayed at the Calexico Police Department. The initiative highlights the students' dedication and the importance of preserving local history.
Why It's Important?
This project serves as an educational tool and a tribute to the legacy of law enforcement in Calexico. It emphasizes the value of community engagement in education and the role of students in preserving local history. By documenting the history of police leadership, the students contribute to a deeper understanding of the community's past and the evolution of its law enforcement practices. This initiative also fosters a sense of civic responsibility and pride among the students, encouraging them to pursue careers in public service.
Beyond the Headlines
The project reflects broader themes of community involvement in education and the importance of historical preservation. It highlights the potential for educational programs to inspire students to engage with their communities and consider careers in public service. The collaboration between the school and the police department demonstrates the benefits of partnerships in education, providing students with real-world experience and a sense of connection to their community's history.
