What's Happening?
Uzbekistan's Presidential Adviser on Ecology, Aziz Abdukhakimov, met with Dr. Tarifa Ajeif Alzaabi, Director General at the International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA), to discuss advancing sustainable agriculture in arid and saline-prone regions.
The collaboration focuses on developing sustainable agricultural systems in Karakalpakstan, a region vulnerable to desertification and water scarcity. The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development is financing a project to train over 1,500 farmers in cultivating salt- and drought-tolerant crops. The initiative also includes the establishment of the Central Asian Center for Ecology and Environment Research to support ecological data management and strategy development.
Why It's Important?
This partnership is crucial for addressing environmental challenges in Karakalpakstan, which faces significant ecological threats. By promoting sustainable agriculture, the initiative aims to improve food security and economic stability in the region. The collaboration also highlights the importance of international cooperation in tackling climate-related issues. The establishment of a research center further underscores Uzbekistan's commitment to environmental governance and biodiversity conservation, potentially serving as a model for other regions facing similar challenges.
