What's Happening?
The Palestinian Authority has ceased its system of transferring monthly salary payments to Palestinians held in Israeli prisons, including those labeled as terrorists by Israel. This decision follows renewed
international pressure, particularly from France. The payments will now be shifted to Tamhin, a Palestine Liberation Organization welfare mechanism that provides aid to those unable to work and living below the poverty line. Former prisoners who support families and have lost the ability to work will be eligible for limited aid of about 2,000 shekels a month.
Why It's Important?
The cessation of prisoner payments marks a significant shift in Palestinian policy, influenced by international pressure. The payments have been a contentious issue, with critics arguing that they incentivize terrorism. The decision may improve relations with international stakeholders, particularly those advocating for peace and stability in the region. However, it could also lead to increased economic hardship for former prisoners and their families, potentially affecting social dynamics within Palestinian society.
