What's Happening?
Adriana Cassano, a student from Irondequoit, has been awarded the Young Citizen of the Year Award by Monroe County officials. The award ceremony took place on April 23, 2026, recognizing Cassano's leadership in founding and leading the Best Buddies Chapter
at Iroquois Middle School. This initiative focuses on advocating for opportunities and support for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Cassano's efforts have been instrumental in fostering connections and friendships among students with and without disabilities. The award was part of the 2026 Youth Awards, which also honored the Seneca Park Zoo Urban Ecology Program Team with the Gary Mervis Team Award and Salvatore Gerbino of Chili with the Willie W. Lightfoot Youth Advocate of the Year Award.
Why It's Important?
The recognition of Adriana Cassano and other young leaders highlights the importance of youth involvement in community service and advocacy. By acknowledging these efforts, the awards encourage more young individuals to engage in social causes, fostering a culture of inclusivity and support for marginalized groups. Cassano's work with the Best Buddies Chapter not only benefits individuals with disabilities but also promotes awareness and understanding among the broader student body. This recognition can inspire other communities to implement similar programs, potentially leading to widespread positive social change.
