What's Happening?
The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) has released TRUE v2, an updated version of its TRUE zero waste certification program. This new iteration aims to provide clearer pathways for organizations to achieve zero waste, emphasizing global applicability
and supporting goals related to decarbonization, business transformation, and circularity. The original TRUE program, launched a decade ago, has already certified over 680 projects, diverting 8.9 million tons of waste from landfills across 272 million square feet. Key updates in TRUE v2 include a rebalanced credit structure to assist projects at various stages of their zero waste journey, improved global usability with more internationally applicable language, and greater recognition for high-impact actions. The program is delivered through Arc, a digital platform designed by GBCI for measuring and verifying sustainability performance.
Why It's Important?
This updated certification program is crucial as waste volumes continue to rise, landfill capacity diminishes, and disposal costs escalate in the U.S. and globally. The Global Waste Management Outlook 2024 projects a potential doubling of direct waste management costs by 2050, while the Environmental Research and Education Foundation reports a 15-30% increase in commercial waste disposal costs in the U.S. since 2016. TRUE v2 offers a standardized roadmap for businesses and organizations to reduce their environmental footprint, mitigate financial burdens associated with waste, and contribute to a more circular economy. By making the certification process clearer and more valuable, USGBC aims to accelerate the adoption of zero waste practices, benefiting both the environment and economic stakeholders through reduced waste and improved resource efficiency.
What's Next?
The USGBC anticipates that TRUE v2 will encourage more organizations to pursue zero waste certification, driven by the increasing need for sustainable practices and the rising costs of waste management. The program's enhanced clarity and global applicability are expected to broaden its reach, leading to a greater number of certified projects and a larger volume of waste diverted from landfills. As more entities adopt TRUE v2, there will likely be a continued push towards innovative waste reduction strategies, improved material management, and a stronger emphasis on circular economy principles within various industries. The success of this program could also influence policy decisions and corporate sustainability targets across the U.S., fostering a more widespread commitment to zero waste.
Beyond the Headlines
The launch of TRUE v2 signifies a deeper shift in how businesses and institutions approach environmental responsibility, moving beyond mere compliance to proactive engagement in circularity and decarbonization. This program not only addresses the practical challenges of waste management but also promotes a cultural change within organizations, encouraging a more holistic view of resource use. The emphasis on 'zero waste impacts' suggests a future where waste is not just minimized but eliminated, transforming waste into valuable resources. This evolution could lead to new business models, technological innovations in waste processing, and a redefinition of product lifecycles, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable and resilient economy.
