average. This summer has followed the trend, with morning temperatures at Raleigh-Durham International Airport averaging 1 to 6 degrees warmer than normal each month, making it the fifth-warmest summer on record at RDU so far. The trend of warming nights is widespread, with 95% of 243 major U.S. cities analyzed by Climate Central experiencing more unusually warm summer nights. On average, U.S. cities have gained 24 warmer-than-normal nights each summer, with the South and Southeast seeing the largest increases, averaging 33 to 35 additional warm nights. Climate Central meteorologist Shel Winkley noted that nighttime temperatures are warming almost twice as fast as daytime temperatures in North America, attributing this to human-caused climate change and the role of humidity in the Southeast, which prevents efficient cooling after sunset.
