What's Happening?
Eni and TotalEnergies have approved the final investment decision for the Cronos gas project located off the coast of Cyprus. This project is notable for its trans-boundary subsea tieback that crosses two Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs). The development
plan includes four subsea wells situated approximately 90 nautical miles southwest of Cyprus. These wells will connect via pipeline to the Zohr field on the Egyptian side of the EEZ boundary. The gas extracted will be processed and liquefied at the Damietta LNG terminal. The Cronos project is expected to produce about 500 million standard cubic feet of gas per day, with an estimated total reserve of three trillion cubic feet. The project is slated for completion by 2028.
Why It's Important?
The Cronos gas project is significant as it contributes to Europe's energy security by diversifying its LNG supply sources. The project aligns with strategies to prioritize low-cost and low-emission energy projects. The Damietta LNG terminal, which had been closed from 2013 to 2021 due to a lack of gas, will be restarted with gas from Cronos. This will support approximately 2.8 million tonnes per annum of LNG export capacity, primarily serving the European market.
