What's Happening?
South West Water (SWW) has issued a plea to the public to avoid pouring fats, oils, and grease down sinks during the Christmas period to prevent drain blockages known as 'fatbergs.' The utility company
has cleared over 7,000 blockages this year, largely caused by improper disposal of these substances and wet wipes. SWW advises disposing of cooled fats and oils in bins or food waste caddies and warns against flushing wet wipes, even those labeled 'flushable.' The company is working with environmental compliance experts to ensure safe disposal practices.
Why It's Important?
The formation of fatbergs poses significant challenges to wastewater management systems, leading to costly and labor-intensive blockages. SWW's campaign highlights the importance of public awareness and responsible disposal practices to protect the environment and maintain efficient sewer systems. The issue is particularly relevant during peak periods like Christmas when the volume of waste increases. By following SWW's advice, households can contribute to reducing environmental impact and ensuring a smoother operation of wastewater services, benefiting both the community and the environment.
