What's Happening?
The Keppel Sakra Cogeneration Plant, a 600MW combined-cycle gas turbine power plant, is under development on Jurong Island, Singapore. Scheduled to begin operations in the first half of 2026, the plant is part of Singapore's commitment to decarbonization
and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The project, developed by Keppel Sakra Cogen and Keppel Energy, involves an investment of approximately S$750 million. The plant will initially operate on natural gas with the capability to use hydrogen, aiming to reduce CO2 emissions significantly compared to the average for natural gas-fired generation in Singapore.
Why It's Important?
The development of the Keppel Sakra Cogeneration Plant is crucial for Singapore's energy transition and climate goals. By integrating advanced technology and sustainable practices, the plant will contribute to reducing the carbon footprint of Singapore's energy sector. This project aligns with global efforts to combat climate change and highlights the role of innovative energy solutions in achieving sustainability targets. The plant's ability to transition to hydrogen fuel represents a significant step towards cleaner energy production, setting a benchmark for future projects in the region.
