China has launched the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization (WAICO) in Shanghai, marking a significant step in its bid for global leadership in AI. The launch was accompanied by a four-day conference attended by government representatives
from several Southeast Asian countries. Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized international cooperation on AI, contrasting China's open-source models with the United States' closed models. Five Southeast Asian countries, including Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, and Myanmar, are among the 29 founding members of WAICO. Notably, Singapore did not join, despite its alignment with open-source AI. Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, a guest of honor, did not sign on to WAICO, instead presenting his own vision for AI governance.
