The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched an investigation into Ford's one-liter EcoBoost engine due to reports of catastrophic failures. The engine, used in models such as the Ford Fiesta and Focus, features a wet belt system
that has been linked to oil starvation and engine failure. The investigation follows 355 reports of engine failure, with an average failure mileage of 70,000 miles, well below the 150,000-mile replacement interval. The issue is attributed to debris from the timing belt clogging the oil pump pick-up screen, leading to reduced oil pressure. Ford has revised the wet belt replacement interval to six years or 100,000 miles.
