What's Happening?
Prairie Farmer magazine has announced the recipients of its 2026 Master Farmer awards, recognizing five outstanding Illinois farmers for their contributions to agriculture, family commitment, and community service. Among the honorees is Doug Winter of Mill
Shoals, a fifth-generation farmer who will plant his family's 157th crop this spring. Winter has expanded his farm from 60 acres to 3,200 acres, focusing on corn and soybeans, and has implemented conservation practices such as no-till farming and cover crops. His leadership extends beyond farming, as he has represented Illinois soybean growers internationally and pioneered virtual outreach initiatives. Other awardees include Steve Hettinger, Mike and Lynn Martz, and Mike Pratt, with Mark Gebhards named as an Honorary Master Farmer.
Why It's Important?
The Master Farmer award highlights the critical role of agriculture in Illinois and the broader U.S. economy.
