What's Happening?
Three trainees from the Institut maritime du Québec (IMQ) have been successfully repatriated from the Persian Gulf after being trapped aboard two vessels, N/M Rosaire A. Desgagnés and N/M Miena Desgagnés, since February 28. The repatriation was coordinated
by DESGAGNÉS, in collaboration with local maritime agents and Saudi authorities, due to uncertainties regarding security measures for the vessels' departure via the Strait of Hormuz. The trainees, who were part of a sea training program required for their college diploma in Navigation and a deck officer's certificate, were flown safely from Saudi Arabia to Europe and then to Canada. Throughout the process, IMQ provided support services, including personalized psychosocial support for the trainees and their families.
Why It's Important?
The successful repatriation of the trainees underscores the importance of international cooperation and effective crisis management in the maritime industry. The situation highlights the challenges faced by maritime training programs in ensuring the safety and well-being of their participants in volatile regions. The incident also emphasizes the need for robust contingency plans and support systems for trainees and their families during unforeseen events. The resolution of this situation allows the trainees to continue their education and pursue careers in the maritime industry, contributing to the sector's workforce development.
