What's Happening?
Starting April 13, North Haven, Connecticut, will begin issuing $250 fines to drivers who illegally pass stopped school buses, using automated cameras installed on the buses. The town has been in a warning phase, during which nearly 300 warnings were
issued to drivers. The cameras capture video and license plate information of vehicles that fail to stop within 10 feet of a school bus displaying flashing lights. The footage is reviewed by town authorities to determine violations. This initiative aims to enhance safety for school children and address concerns about reckless driving.
Why It's Important?
The implementation of automated fines for passing school buses in North Haven represents a significant step towards improving road safety and protecting school children. The use of technology to enforce traffic laws can deter reckless driving and reduce the risk of accidents involving school buses. This initiative may serve as a model for other towns and cities seeking to enhance traffic enforcement and safety measures. The program also highlights the role of local government in addressing community concerns and prioritizing public safety.
