What's Happening?
The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) has announced the closure of 105th Avenue on the east side of Highway 65 in Blaine, effective 6 a.m. on Monday, November 9. This closure is necessary for utility and watermain relocation work. Traffic
will be rerouted using a signed detour via Davenport Street to access north or south Highway 65. While westbound 105th Avenue between Davenport Street and Highway 65 will remain open for local business traffic only, northbound Highway 65 will still allow access to eastbound 105th Avenue. This closure is part of a larger five-year project aimed at converting existing at-grade intersections along Highway 65 into interchanges, with the highway elevated above. The project also includes the construction of a pedestrian/bicycle bridge and the rerouting of local street connections.
Why It's Important?
This road closure and the broader Highway 65 project are significant for residents and commuters in Blaine, Minnesota. The temporary detours will likely cause increased travel times and congestion, impacting daily commutes and local businesses that rely on easy access. However, the long-term benefits of the project are substantial. By converting at-grade intersections into interchanges, MnDOT aims to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and enhance safety along Highway 65. The addition of a pedestrian/bicycle bridge will also improve accessibility and connectivity for non-vehicular traffic. These improvements are crucial for supporting the growing population and economic activity in the Blaine area, ultimately leading to a more efficient and safer transportation network.
What's Next?
The 105th Avenue closure, along with 104th Way, is expected to continue until mid-December. Drivers are advised to plan ahead, check 511 for real-time traffic updates, and consider alternate routes to avoid delays. The overall five-year project, which includes multiple interchange conversions and infrastructure upgrades, is slated for completion in summer 2030. This long-term construction will continue to bring periodic lane and road closures, requiring ongoing patience from the public. Upon completion, the project is expected to provide a smoother road surface, extend pavement life, and significantly improve the overall transportation experience in the region.
Beyond the Headlines
The ongoing infrastructure development along Highway 65 in Blaine highlights a broader trend of urban and suburban growth in Minnesota. As communities expand, the demand for modern and efficient transportation infrastructure increases, leading to extensive and often disruptive construction projects. While these projects can cause short-term inconveniences, they are essential for accommodating future growth, enhancing public safety, and supporting economic development. The focus on pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure, such as the new bridge, also reflects a growing emphasis on multimodal transportation options and sustainable urban planning, aiming to create more livable and connected communities beyond just vehicular traffic.
