Satellite imagery analyzed by Spencer Faragasso of the Institute for Science and International Security on August 30 reveals Russia is constructing a large-scale defensive system around its Alabuga Special Economic Zone in Tatarstan. This zone is Russia's
primary production site for Geran and Gerbera drones, which are Russian copies of Iranian-designed Shaheds. The defensive system, observed in high-resolution satellite images from Vantor and Airbus taken in July and August, consists of two rings of lattice towers. An inner perimeter of lower structures directly surrounds the main production facilities, while an outer perimeter of taller towers covers a wider area. Construction of these towers began around May 18, with significant progress on the outer security perimeter by the end of July. Analysts believe these structures are designed to support a metal cable net, intended to protect the facilities from drone and cruise missile attacks. This fortification effort comes as Ukraine increasingly targets Russian sites with drones and FP-5 cruise missiles.
